Mitchell, South Dakota – Southeast South Dakota is in the crosshairs of a severe thunderstorm cluster capable of producing 80 mph winds and large hail, with the greatest risk between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch covers counties including Davison, Yankton, and Minnehaha. The storms have shown a consistent track of wind damage and are now moving toward key corridors like I-90 and Highway 81.

Communities from Mitchell to Sioux Falls may see rapid changes in weather with little warning time. Emergency officials recommend moving indoors, avoiding travel, and keeping emergency alerts on.

Wind gusts overnight could lead to localized power outages, downed trees, and dangerous debris. Campgrounds and mobile home parks are particularly vulnerable.

This marks one of the most significant overnight wind events of the season. Residents should remain on alert through early Saturday.
