Chicago, IL – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to impact much of northern Illinois late Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing threats of hail and heavy rainfall during the early commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the most active storm period will fall between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. CDT Friday. While widespread severe weather is not expected, some stronger storms could produce hail up to one inch in diameter, frequent lightning, and localized downpours. Wind gusts from the west could reach speeds of 40 mph.

Drivers across the Chicago metro area, including suburban counties like DuPage, Lake, and Will, should prepare for reduced visibility and potential ponding on roads during early travel hours. Temperatures are forecast to climb rapidly into the mid-70s by Friday afternoon, supported by strong southwest winds.

The weekend outlook brings fluctuating temperatures and continued rain chances, particularly Saturday night and Sunday, when showers may mix with wet snow in northern areas. Monday may bring a return to colder air, with highs in the 40s and potential rain/snow mix in the morning.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts overnight and remain weather-aware during Friday’s commute.
