Springfield, IL – A powerful winter storm is producing heavy snow and even thundersnow across central Illinois this afternoon, creating dangerous travel conditions from Jacksonville to Springfield.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, moderate to heavy snow is continuing into the evening, with reports of intense snow bands and thunder-snow activity detected on radar. Snow is expected to mix with rain and gradually end later tonight as temperatures rise.

Forecasters warn of slippery roadways, reduced visibility, and increased accident risks throughout the afternoon and evening. The heaviest snow has been observed along Interstate 55 and U.S. 67, where localized accumulations have already made roads hazardous and slow-moving.

Residents are urged to delay travel if possible and use extreme caution if driving. Even after snow ends, melting and refreezing may cause slick spots overnight.

The National Weather Service continues to monitor the storm and encourages the public to follow updates at weather.gov/ilx or on the NWS Central Illinois social media channels.
