Gaylord, MI – The National Weather Service in Gaylord is warning of a high-impact lake-effect snow event expected from Wednesday evening through Friday, just in time for Thanksgiving travel.

Forecasters say there is growing confidence that heavy lake-effect snow will develop off Lakes Superior and Michigan, producing high snowfall rates and blowing snow that could make travel difficult to hazardous across Gaylord, Petoskey, Grayling, Cadillac, and Sault Ste. Marie.

According to the NWS, the best chances for heavy snow will occur late Wednesday through Thanksgiving Day, with lesser impacts lingering into Friday morning. Strong winds may further reduce visibility, especially in open and rural areas.

Officials note that the timing of rain changing to snow and the exact storm track could shift in the coming days, which may affect where the heaviest snow bands develop.

Travelers heading north for Thanksgiving should check the latest forecasts, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for snow-covered roads and blowing snow Wednesday night into Thursday.
