Grand Rapids, MI – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for western and central Michigan, extending north into the Upper Peninsula, where heavy snow, blowing winds, and possible icing could disrupt Thanksgiving travel beginning Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Grand Rapids and Marquette, snow will develop Wednesday evening as colder air moves in, with a wintry mix transitioning to heavy snow overnight. Accumulations of 4 to 7 inches are expected across Lake, Osceola, and Clare counties, while areas farther north — including Delta, Schoolcraft, and Luce counties — could see up to 12 inches.

Wind gusts of 35 to 40 mph are expected to cause blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility below a quarter mile at times. The combination of wet snow, ice, and strong winds may also lead to power outages and downed tree branches.

Forecasters warn that Thanksgiving morning travel could be dangerous, especially along US-131, M-55, and US-2. Officials urge travelers to review plans, delay unnecessary trips, and pack a winter emergency kit including blankets, food, and water.

Snow and wind are expected to continue into Friday morning, keeping roads slick and visibility low even after the heaviest bands move out.
