Burlington, VT – Travelers across Vermont and northern New York should prepare for blustery Thanksgiving weather as lake effect snow and gusty winds build across the region by Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, localized lake effect snow will develop early Thursday in St. Lawrence County and the western Adirondacks, with totals reaching up to 4 inches in spots like Rome and Old Forge. By late Thursday, scattered upslope snow showers will move into Vermont, mainly impacting the Green Mountains and areas east of Burlington.
Wind gusts will be another concern, with peak speeds between 30–35 mph expected across the Champlain Valley, southern Vermont, and parts of the Adirondacks through Friday morning. These gusts could reduce visibility during snow squalls and make for slick, unpredictable roads during peak holiday travel times.
Communities including Barre, Montpelier, and Middlebury may see brief snow bursts and gusty winds Thursday evening. In New York, I-81 through Jefferson and Lewis counties may experience reduced traction during snowfall.
Drivers should allow extra time for travel, use caution on bridges and overpasses, and stay alert for changing road conditions. Additional advisories may be issued through Friday depending on snow rates and wind intensity.
