South Bend, IN – Snow and wind will make for a tricky Thanksgiving Eve across Michiana, with lake effect snow showers expected to intensify Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing up to 6 inches in localized bands.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 10 a.m. EST Wednesday for Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph counties in Michigan. Snow will begin as patchy showers in the morning but increase in both coverage and intensity through the evening, fueled by colder air and shifting winds.
Heaviest totals are expected north of U.S. 20, where areas like Three Rivers could see between 4 and 6 inches of snow. South Bend and La Porte may receive 2 to 3 inches, with reduced visibility and slick roads during peak travel hours. Even farther south, lighter accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible around Fort Wayne and Warsaw.
Drivers across Michiana should be alert for drifting snow and rapidly changing road conditions, especially on untreated secondary roads. Conditions improve by Thanksgiving morning, but caution is advised overnight as temperatures fall below freezing.
