Amarillo, TX — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, effective from 6 p.m. Monday through noon Tuesday. Wind chills are expected to plummet to as low as -25°F in some areas.
According to the NWS, impacted counties include Armstrong, Carson, Deaf Smith, Oldham, Potter, Randall, and surrounding regions. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin under these conditions, and hypothermia risks are heightened.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor exposure, wear multiple layers, and include a hat, gloves, and face covering if going outside is unavoidable. Pets should also be kept indoors as much as possible.
Temperatures will remain dangerously low overnight, with winds amplifying the cold. Communities such as Amarillo, Canyon, Dumas, and Guymon are urged to take precautions to stay safe.
Emergency preparedness tips include sealing drafts in homes, ensuring proper heating, and checking on vulnerable neighbors or relatives. Travel is also discouraged due to the risk of exposure.
The warning is expected to lift by noon Tuesday, but residents should continue monitoring updates from local officials.
