Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for North and Central Texas, raising concern for icy roads and hazardous travel beginning Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, the watch covers the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex and surrounding areas from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night. Forecasters say a widespread wintry weather event is increasingly likely, with freezing rain, sleet, and snow all possible as temperatures fall.

Forecast guidance shows rain transitioning to freezing rain and sleet Friday afternoon and evening, with the most likely onset of travel impacts across the DFW area occurring between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday. As colder air deepens, precipitation is expected to gradually change to sleet and snow late Friday night into Saturday, especially north of Interstate 20.

While snowfall amounts remain uncertain, ice accumulation poses the greatest risk. Even light icing can make roads treacherous, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and elevated ramps. Major corridors including Interstates 20, 30, 35E, 35W, and 635 could see significant slowdowns or closures if icing develops.

In addition to travel hazards, the National Weather Service warns of dangerously cold temperatures following the storm. Overnight lows Saturday night and Sunday night are expected to fall into the teens and single digits, with wind chills between 0 and -10 degrees, increasing the risk of frozen pipes and power disruptions.

Residents are urged to complete preparations before Friday, including protecting exposed pipes, checking vehicles, and monitoring forecast updates. Officials emphasize that exact timing and precipitation types may shift as the event approaches.

Commuters, freight operators, and weekend travelers across the DFW Metroplex should prepare for potentially dangerous roadway conditions through the weekend.
