Corpus Christi, TX – Freezing rain and snow have led to hazardous road conditions across South Texas, with closures affecting major highways. Officials urge residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), several roads in the Rio Grande Plains and Brush Country are closed due to ice. The affected areas include parts of I-35 and US 281. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. today, with forecasts predicting additional sleet and snow accumulation. The National Weather Service reports wind chills as low as 18°F, making prolonged exposure potentially dangerous. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors, dress in layers, and take precautions to protect pets and plumbing from freezing temperatures.
Looking ahead, Wednesday is expected to bring mostly sunny skies with highs near 48°F, offering relief from today’s extreme weather. Overnight lows will drop back to 28°F, requiring continued caution for icy patches on roads.
The five-day forecast shows a gradual warming trend, with highs reaching 56°F by Friday under sunny skies. However, another cold front could bring chilly nights later in the week, with temperatures dipping into the 30s.
Residents should remain vigilant as icy bridges and overpasses will likely remain hazardous until temperatures rise. Plan ahead, drive cautiously, and prepare for any additional weather alerts.
