Austin, TX – A winter storm warning remains in effect across Central Texas, with sleet and freezing rain creating hazardous travel conditions. Ice-covered roadways, including stretches of I-10 near Flatonia and Weimar, have prompted officials to discourage travel through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain and sleet are expected to persist overnight, leading to ice accumulations up to one-quarter inch. Wind chills are forecast to drop as low as 10°F to 15°F, increasing the risk of hypothermia with prolonged exposure. The cold weather advisory for South Texas remains active until noon Wednesday.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially along the I-10 and I-35 corridors, where icy bridges and overpasses are particularly dangerous. If travel is unavoidable, officials recommend carrying emergency supplies such as a flashlight, warm clothing, and non-perishable food.
The forecast predicts clearing skies by Wednesday afternoon, with temperatures slowly rising to the mid-40s. However, freezing conditions are expected to return overnight, possibly refreezing wet roads and prolonging travel hazards.
Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable family members, bring outdoor pets inside, and ensure proper heating safety. For road condition updates, visit DriveTexas.org or call 800-452-9292.
Looking ahead, warmer temperatures are expected by the weekend, with highs in the upper 50s and sunny skies. Until then, extreme caution is advised as Central Texas faces another 24 hours of icy conditions.
