Amarillo, Texas – Winds will whip through the Texas Panhandle Thursday with gusts up to 30 mph, raising travel risks on I-40 and other open highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, breezy conditions are expected Thursday afternoon as west-southwest winds strengthen to 15 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph. Loose outdoor objects could become airborne, and drivers on exposed routes like U.S. 287 and I-27 should remain alert for sudden gusts and reduced control.

Humidity levels will remain low, and with daytime highs reaching 89°F, fire danger will persist across dry grasslands and rural areas. This pattern continues into the weekend, keeping the region under elevated spring fire weather conditions.

Friday stays sunny and slightly cooler, with highs around 84°F and lighter west winds. By Saturday, heat rebounds again, pushing the mercury near 86°F with calm southern breezes. Clear skies and bone-dry air dominate the five-day outlook, which ends Monday with sunshine and a high near 89°F.

Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid outdoor burns, and take extra care on roads during Thursday’s peak wind hours. No rainfall is in sight, and with multiple days in the upper 80s, early summer heat is already arriving in force.

Winds will ease after Thursday night, but dry, sunny weather holds through early next week. No hazardous weather is expected beyond Monday, though updates may follow if conditions change.
