Lubbock, Texas – Drivers along the I-27 corridor in West Texas should brace for powerful winds this afternoon, with gusts up to 45 mph expected from 1 to 9 p.m. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the South Plains and far southwestern Texas Panhandle, warning of difficult travel conditions and blowing dust.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, sustained southwest winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph by early afternoon, with the strongest gusts concentrated along and west of I-27. Counties under the advisory include Lubbock, Hockley, Cochran, Lamb, Bailey, and parts of Parmer and Castro.
High-profile vehicles and those towing trailers should use caution, particularly on east-west highways. Blowing dust could reduce visibility in open areas, and unsecured objects may become airborne. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak gusts.
This level of wind is not uncommon for the region but can still disrupt daily activities and cause minor damage. The advisory is set to expire at 9 p.m., though similar gusts may return later this week.
Updates will be issued as conditions evolve. Stay alert and check local news or NWS Lubbock for the latest advisories.
