Austin, Texas – A dramatic temperature rollercoaster is expected across South-Central Texas this week as a powerful cold front briefly interrupts near-record heat before temperatures surge again later in the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin–San Antonio, Sunday will feel more like summer, with afternoon highs soaring into the mid to upper 90s across much of the region, including 97° in Del Rio, 94° in Austin, and around 96° in San Antonio.

The heat won’t last long.

A strong cold front will sweep through the region late Sunday into Monday, sending temperatures sharply downward. Highs Monday will struggle to reach the upper 50s to near 60 degrees in many areas.

Behind the front, overnight lows will drop into the 30s and lower 40s Monday night, bringing a noticeably chilly start to Tuesday morning.

However, the cooler weather will be short-lived.

Temperatures will quickly rebound through the middle of the week, climbing back into the upper 70s and 80s by Wednesday, and returning to the upper 80s and low 90s by Thursday and Friday.

By the end of the week, forecasters say South-Central Texas will be right back to scorching heat, marking a dramatic weather swing of more than 40 degrees within just a few days.

Despite the strong front, rain is not expected with the system, meaning the region will remain dry through much of the week.
