Texas – Cold air slides quietly across the South Plains this morning, hinting at a brief winter tease that could whiten parts of Lubbock by early Thursday. A weak upper system tracking in from New Mexico is expected to drop light snow between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, with a dusting to one-half inch possible in spots across the far southern Texas Panhandle.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, flurries will begin late today, tapering Thursday morning. While accumulations will be minor, even light snow can reduce visibility and leave bridges slick before sunrise. Temperatures will stay near freezing through the early morning hours, so drivers should use caution along I-27 and Loop 289 during their Thursday commute.
Behind the snow chance, skies will clear and temperatures will rebound slightly into the upper 50s by Friday. But the crisp air and chilly mornings will linger through the weekend, keeping the feel of early December firmly in place.
Meteorologists say this pattern marks Texas’ first real taste of winter. “Accumulations will stay light, but it’s a clear sign cold air is here to stay,” forecasters said early Wednesday. With Arctic air gripping much of the northern U.S., Lubbock remains on the southern edge of a larger continental chill spreading across the Plains.
Five-Day Outlook:
• Thursday: High 43°, chance of light snow until noon.
• Friday: Mostly sunny, high 59°.
• Saturday: Clear, high 63°.
• Sunday: Sunny, high 60°.
• Monday: Mostly sunny, high near 65°.
