Del Rio, Texas – Freezing temperatures are expected to settle across southwest Texas early Sunday, putting people, pets, plants, and exposed pipes at risk during the coldest hours of the morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin–San Antonio, a Freeze Warning is in effect for Kinney and Val Verde counties from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday. Overnight temperatures are forecast to drop into the 27 to 32 degree range, cold enough to cause damage to unprotected plumbing and sensitive vegetation.
The coldest conditions are expected around daybreak Sunday, especially in rural and low-lying areas outside Del Rio, Brackettville, and along U.S. Highway 90 and U.S. Highway 277. This freeze may be the first widespread hard freeze of the season for some locations, increasing the risk of burst pipes and crop damage.
Residents are urged to drip faucets, wrap exposed pipes, and bring pets indoors before temperatures fall. Tender plants should be covered or moved inside, and those without adequate heating should take precautions to stay warm during the early morning hours.
Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing later Sunday morning, but additional cold mornings remain possible as winter weather settles into the region. Officials recommend staying alert for updated advisories and taking action now to reduce cold-related damage.
