Houston, Texas – Triple-digit heat is back in southeast Texas as heat index values climb to 105° in Houston on Sunday, July 20. Residents commuting along I-45, US-59, and SH 288 should brace for scorching conditions during peak afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday’s high will hit 96°F under mostly sunny skies. Heat index values are expected to exceed 100°F by midday and remain dangerously high into early evening. A south wind of 5 to 10 mph offers little relief, making heat safety essential — limit strenuous activity, drink plenty of water, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday will remain sunny with highs of 96°F and lows around 77°F. By Wednesday, July 23, the heat intensifies, pushing daytime highs to 97°F. The first chance for a break comes Thursday and Friday, with a 20–50% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms returning to the forecast.

This extended stretch of dry, oppressive heat could strain HVAC systems and increase wildfire risk across dry brush areas. Power grids may also feel the pressure as air conditioners run continuously during daytime hours.
