LUBBOCK, Texas – After a stretch of mild, sunny fall weather, rain and thunderstorms will return to the South Plains beginning Thursday, marking a notable shift toward a wetter pattern that lasts through the weekend. The National Weather Service in Lubbock said the storms will develop as moisture increases ahead of an approaching upper-level system.

According to the NWS Lubbock office, temperatures Wednesday will peak in the lower 80s under bright skies and light south-southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph. By Thursday, storm chances rise across both the Caprock and Rolling Plains, with highs dipping into the upper 70s. Some storms could produce brief heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds, though widespread severe weather is not expected at this time.

Friday and Saturday will remain unsettled, with scattered showers continuing and temperatures cooling further into the upper 60s and low 70s. Areas east of Lubbock may see higher rainfall totals through Saturday morning. Drivers should allow extra time for wet roads, and outdoor events may need to adjust schedules around passing thunderstorms.

The weekend looks cooler overall, and drier conditions are expected to return by Sunday as the system exits the region.
