Lubbock, Texas – A stretch of unseasonably warm fall weather will linger across the South Plains through early next week before showers and thunderstorms arrive by Tuesday night. Afternoon highs near 90 degrees will dominate, raising concerns for outdoor safety and strong weekend winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, Friday and Saturday will remain sunny with highs in the upper 80s to near 90. Winds will strengthen on Saturday, with south gusts reaching up to 25 mph. Blowing dust along U.S. 84 and I-27 may briefly reduce visibility, especially in rural areas. Saturday night lows will stay mild in the mid-60s, unusual for early October.

By Sunday and Monday, sunshine and above-normal highs continue, holding steady in the upper 80s. According to forecasters, the pattern begins to shift Tuesday as a cold front approaches from New Mexico. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected Tuesday evening, followed by a slight chance of lingering rain Wednesday. Afternoon highs will drop into the upper 70s by midweek, offering the first taste of more seasonable October conditions.

Emergency managers recommend securing loose outdoor items before Saturday’s gusts and staying alert for sudden dust impacts on area roadways. Early next week, residents should prepare for lightning and localized downpours that could slow travel during the evening commute. Farmers and ranchers are urged to monitor conditions closely, as the dry and windy weekend may increase fire spread risk before storms arrive.

With hot afternoons and breezy nights continuing, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, dress in layers for cooler mornings, and monitor pets, plants, and vehicles for heat exposure.
