Lubbock, TX – A widespread fall freeze will grip West and North Texas late tonight into Thursday morning, threatening crops, outdoor pipes, and sensitive plants. Temperatures are expected to plunge into the 20s across the Panhandle and upper 20s to near freezing elsewhere.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 3 AM to 9 AM CDT Thursday for Crosby, Lubbock, Lynn, Terry, Briscoe, and neighboring Rolling Plains counties, with lows as cold as 25–28°F.
The NWS Amarillo warns of similar conditions across the Panhandle, including Potter, Randall, Carson, Gray, and Hemphill counties, where some sheltered areas could reach 24°F.
NWS Midland/Odessa has issued Freeze Warnings for Gaines, Dawson, Andrews, Martin, and Howard counties during the same period. Further south, NWS San Angelo extends the warning to West Central Texas, including Abilene, Brownwood, and San Angelo. In North Texas, the NWS Fort Worth Freeze Warning covers Young, Stephens, Eastland, and Mills counties 4 AM to 9 AM Thursday, following an evening Wind Advisory.
Residents should drip and wrap exposed pipes, cover plants, and bring pets indoors tonight. Morning wind chills will feel several degrees colder, especially north of I-20. Early commuters and students should prepare for biting cold at sunrise, with frost possible on elevated surfaces along I-10 near Van Horn and I-20 from Midland to Abilene.
