Houston, Texas – A developing tropical disturbance in the Bay of Campeche may not reach tropical depression status before Friday, but Southeast Texas is still in for a soaking. Locally heavy rainfall and elevated rip current risks are expected along the coast starting Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service Houston-Galveston office, the system has a 40% chance of forming into a tropical depression before moving inland over northeast Mexico or South Texas by Friday evening. Even without strengthening, enhanced Gulf moisture is forecast to trigger widespread showers and thunderstorms, particularly south of I-10 and US-59.

Storm impacts could include gusty winds, downpours capable of minor street flooding, and strong surf conditions at area beaches. The National Weather Service has placed much of coastal and southeast Texas under a Level 1 (Marginal) risk for excessive rainfall. Flash flooding is not expected to be widespread, but forecasters warn repeated rounds of heavy rain could overwhelm localized areas.

Beachgoers are urged to use caution on Friday and Saturday, with rip currents likely to strengthen. Boaters and swimmers should stay weather-aware and check local advisories before heading out.

More updates are expected as the system evolves. Rain chances and potential hazards could increase if the storm intensifies over the Gulf.
