Lubbock, Texas – Scorching heat grips the South Plains again this week as temperatures soar into the mid-90s across Lubbock starting Tuesday, July 29. Conditions are expected to remain hot and dry through Sunday, bringing increased health and fire risks for the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, Tuesday’s high will peak near 95°F with southwest winds up to 10 mph. Sunny skies and minimal cloud cover will continue into the weekend, with highs climbing to 96°F Wednesday and Thursday. Heat index values could top 100°F during peak hours. U.S. Route 84 and surrounding roadways may see increased vehicle strain and pavement hazards in prolonged sun exposure.

Residents should limit outdoor activity during the afternoon, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Air conditioning systems may face high usage, so ERCOT encourages energy conservation during peak heat from 3 to 7 p.m.

While this week stays dry, a slight 30% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms returns Friday night into Saturday. Though brief, the storms could bring wind gusts and localized lightning risks.
