Houston, Texas – Dark clouds are already spreading across the Houston area, and the atmosphere is primed for another round of heavy downpours and thunderstorms before the afternoon commute. Roads could quickly become slick as bursts of rain reduce visibility and create standing water in low-lying locations.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread through the day, with an 80% chance of precipitation. High temperatures will reach around 93 degrees, while heat index values may climb to 101 degrees before storms develop. Rainfall totals between one-half and three-quarters of an inch are expected, with locally higher amounts beneath stronger thunderstorms.
Drivers along Interstate 10, Interstate 45, Interstate 69, Beltway 8, the Sam Houston Tollway and the Gulf Freeway should prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions. Heavy rain may briefly reduce visibility, while ponding water could slow traffic during the busiest travel periods. If thunder roars, move indoors and avoid flooded roadways.
The unsettled pattern continues Tuesday with another 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms and highs near 88 degrees. Rain becomes more scattered Wednesday, although a 50% chance of afternoon storms remains before drier weather gradually develops later in the week.
Across the southern United States, a moisture-rich air mass continues fueling repeated rounds of thunderstorms. Some storms may produce intense rainfall, frequent lightning and gusty winds. While widespread severe weather is not expected across Houston, isolated stronger storms cannot be ruled out. Tornado potential remains low but should continue to be monitored as individual storms evolve.
By Thursday and Friday, rain chances decrease while temperatures rebound into the lower 90s. The weekend trends hotter, with highs climbing into the middle 90s under increasing sunshine.
Stay weather-aware throughout the day, allow extra travel time during heavy rain, and keep multiple ways to receive weather alerts if thunderstorms strengthen.
