Texas – Cold air presses deep into South Central Texas as breath fogs instantly and frost clings to rooftops. Wind slides through neighborhoods, making the chill feel sharper than the thermometer suggests early this morning.
An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect for all of South Central Texas through midday. Wind chills as low as 5 degrees below zero are possible in parts of the Hill Country, with most of the region experiencing single-digit to teen wind chills.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin–San Antonio, temperatures near 26 degrees were reported at San Antonio International Airport early, with north winds adding bite. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of hypothermia and frostbite, especially without layered clothing.
Road conditions remain mostly dry, but cold creates hidden hazards. Bridges, flyovers, and shaded roads cool fastest. Any moisture from irrigation or melting frost may refreeze quickly, raising flash freezing concerns during the morning commute. Slow down on elevated roadways.
The cold also threatens pipes, pets, and livestock. Unprotected plumbing may freeze and burst. Pets should remain indoors, and outdoor animals need unfrozen water and shelter. Space heaters must be used carefully and never left unattended.
Conditions improve rapidly Tuesday as sunshine strengthens. Highs climb into the upper 30s, easing freeze concerns by afternoon. By Wednesday, temperatures surge into the mid-50s, marking a sharp turnaround.
Late week warmth continues. Thursday and Friday bring highs in the mid to upper 50s with dry skies. Nights remain cool, but widespread freezing becomes less likely.
The broader 6–10 day outlook favors below-normal precipitation across much of Texas. Warmer-than-average temperatures expand across the Southeast into early February.
Bundle up this morning and protect pipes before leaving home. How cold did it feel in your part of San Antonio today?
