Amarillo, Texas – Darkening clouds could build over parts of the Texas Panhandle later today, bringing scattered thunderstorms before a surge of hotter air settles in early next week. Roads may stay dry for much of the morning, but conditions could change quickly by late afternoon as isolated storms develop.
Residents across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles should prepare for a changing weather pattern over the next several days. According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, there is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. today, with locally heavy downpours, occasional lightning, and brief reductions in visibility possible. The overall risk for severe weather remains very low, but a stronger storm cannot be completely ruled out.
High temperatures reach 91 degrees today before climbing to 92 degrees Sunday with another afternoon storm chance around 20%. By Monday, skies turn mostly sunny and temperatures rise to 95 degrees, marking the beginning of a hotter stretch.
Tuesday brings the most significant change. Highs are expected to reach 99 degrees, with triple-digit temperatures becoming increasingly likely later in the week. The National Weather Service’s hazardous weather outlook also points toward 100-degree heat returning across parts of the Panhandles, increasing the risk of heat-related illness during afternoon hours.
If you’re traveling on Interstate 40, U.S. Highway 287, or Loop 335, remain alert for sudden downpours that could create slick pavement and reduced visibility later today. Lightning can develop quickly even with isolated storms, so move indoors if thunder is heard. While tornado potential remains very low with this setup, staying weather-aware is still recommended whenever thunderstorms develop.
Looking beyond Tuesday, above-normal temperatures are expected to persist through much of next week. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and check on vulnerable neighbors as summer conditions strengthen across the High Plains.
