Amarillo, Texas – Drivers and residents across the Texas Panhandle should prepare for heavy rainfall and potential localized flooding this weekend. Thunderstorms are expected to produce intense downpours with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, creating a significant risk for flash flooding across the region. The heaviest rain is expected to impact the area from tonight through Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the greatest threat for flooding is in the southern Panhandle, where recent rainfall totals have already saturated the ground. Areas with poor drainage, including underpasses and low-lying roads, are particularly vulnerable. The NWS strongly advises the public to remember the phrase: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” when encountering flooded roadways.

The storm system could also bring additional hazards, including gusty winds and frequent lightning. While the entire Panhandle is under a heavy rain watch, cities like Amarillo, Hereford, and Canyon face a higher probability of severe impacts. The heaviest rainfall is forecast to occur overnight into early Sunday. The potential for overnight flooding could make travel difficult and dangerous, particularly on rural roads and highways.

Residents should secure outdoor furniture and charge electronic devices in case of power outages. Avoid non-essential travel late tonight and early Sunday morning, especially if conditions worsen. Additional advisories may be issued as the storm progresses, so staying updated on local alerts is crucial. The flood threat is expected to lessen by Sunday afternoon as the system moves out of the area.
