Abilene, TX – Residents across North and Central Texas should prepare for severe weather later this afternoon as storms move into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, parts of the Big Country—mainly north of Interstate 20 and east of a Haskell to Abilene line—have been upgraded to a “slight risk” for severe weather. Forecasters expect storms to develop after 3 p.m. Sunday, September 21, before spreading southward.

The main threat will be large hail, with damaging winds also possible. The risk is greatest in the Big Country, though forecasters noted a marginal risk extending south as far as the Sterling City–San Angelo–Brady line. In the Concho Valley, storm chances are lower, but isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out.

The weather service advised residents with outdoor plans to monitor forecasts closely throughout the afternoon and evening. Even a single strong storm could cause property damage or travel disruptions.

Hazards identified by the NWS include large hail, damaging winds, and lightning strikes. Officials recommend securing outdoor items, avoiding travel during storms, and moving to sturdy shelter when warnings are issued.
