San Antonio, Texas – Drivers and outdoor plans across Bexar County could be disrupted Saturday afternoon as thunderstorms develop ahead of a rising summer heatwave.

According to the National Weather Service, San Antonio faces a 20% chance of thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Saturday, May 31. Storms may bring lightning and brief downpours, especially along Loop 1604 and I-10 corridors. While not severe, the system may slow traffic and create slick road conditions into the evening.

The storms will clear overnight, giving way to a stretch of early summer heat. Beginning Sunday, June 1, high temperatures will rise into the mid-90s across South Central Texas. Light winds will offer little relief, with Monday and Tuesday peaking at 96°F under mostly sunny skies. Winds may gust up to 20 mph by Monday afternoon.

Those working outdoors or without air conditioning should take precautions: hydrate, wear light clothing, and avoid peak heat hours. Evenings will bring limited cooldowns, with lows hovering in the mid-70s.

Looking ahead, the five-day outlook shows minimal storm activity but persistent heat. Wednesday, June 4, brings another slight chance (20%) of afternoon thunderstorms, followed by a partly sunny Thursday with highs near 97°F.

Though San Antonio remains free of widespread air quality alerts, residents traveling north or east into the Midwest or Appalachians should be aware of smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires.

Warnings remain in place through Saturday evening. Another update is expected Sunday morning as June’s heat intensifies.
