Lubbock, Texas – A fast-drying air mass and gusty winds could rapidly spread any fire across the South Plains beginning around noon Thursday, prompting a Red Flag Warning until 8 p.m. for parts of the Texas Panhandle and Rolling Plains.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, southwest winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph will combine with extremely dry air to create critical fire weather conditions across cities including Plainview, Friona, Tulia, Floydada, and Childress. Relative humidity could drop as low as 11 percent, allowing grass fires to spread quickly if ignited.

The highest concern stretches across the far southern Texas Panhandle, including Hale, Swisher, Castro, and surrounding counties, where dry vegetation and strong winds may allow flames to move rapidly across open land. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly secure trailer chains, and delay any activities that could produce sparks.

Dry weather continues through the weekend with no rain chances in sight, keeping fire danger elevated across much of the South Plains.

Temperatures will climb well above seasonal averages through Sunday, with highs reaching the upper 80s to near 90 degrees in several communities before a cooler push arrives Monday.

Fire officials warn conditions could remain volatile through the weekend, especially as warm temperatures and dry winds persist across the Lubbock region. Additional fire weather alerts may be issued if winds strengthen again.
