Corpus Christi, Texas – A stray spark could ignite fast-moving grassfires by 9 a.m. Sunday as strong northerly winds and extremely dry air sweep across the Coastal Plains and Brush Country through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for much of South Texas, including Nueces, San Patricio, Aransas, Kleberg, Refugio, Calhoun, Victoria, Bee, Live Oak, McMullen, Duval and Jim Wells counties. Northeast winds will range from 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 14 percent while temperatures climb to around 70 degrees.

Communities from Corpus Christi and Rockport inland to Alice, Beeville and Victoria face elevated wildfire danger. Dry grasses along U.S. 77, State Highway 44 and rural farm roads could ignite quickly from welding, equipment use or dragging trailer chains. Once started, flames may spread rapidly across open fields under gusty winds.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose chains and properly extinguish cigarettes. Fire crews will remain on heightened alert through sunset, and additional advisories could follow if dry, breezy conditions continue into the week ahead.
