Lubbock, TX – A strong storm system moving through Texas this weekend is expected to bring widespread rain and the possibility of slick road conditions Saturday morning across the Lubbock region.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, rainfall is forecast to begin early Friday morning and continue through Saturday night across the Caprock and Rolling Plains. Rainfall amounts are expected to range from 0.5″ to 1.5″, with localized heavier totals possible, especially during thunderstorms.
A cold front pushing through Saturday morning will usher in significantly colder air, causing a transition from rain to measurable snow in elevated areas, particularly along the Caprock Escarpment. Snow accumulations could reach up to 2 inches in isolated areas, mainly across the southwestern Texas Panhandle.
The biggest concern, however, is for slick road conditions Saturday morning, especially in regions where snow begins to accumulate. The weather service warns that ponding on roads and low-lying areas is likely, creating hazardous travel conditions. Northerly winds will intensify with sustained speeds between 20-30 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph following the frontal passage.
Officials urge residents and travelers to stay weather-aware and cautious as roadways could become dangerous with the mix of rain, wind, and snow. Motorists are encouraged to monitor local updates and delay travel during early Saturday if possible.
