Amarillo, Texas – Large hail up to 1.5 inches and wind gusts reaching 65 mph could impact parts of the southeast Texas Panhandle late Tuesday, with storms developing rapidly along a cold front.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storm development is expected between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. CDT, with the highest risk focused east of Amarillo toward Wheeler, Shamrock, and the Oklahoma border. A few storms could turn severe, producing hail the size of ping pong balls and damaging winds.
Communities including Pampa, Canadian, and Wheeler sit in the zone with the greatest storm potential, while areas farther west such as Amarillo and Dumas face a lower but still possible risk. The timing of the cold front will determine exactly where storms intensify, but eastern counties are most likely to see stronger impacts.
Drivers along I-40 should prepare for sudden visibility drops and strong crosswinds, especially during the evening hours. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay alert for warnings as storms develop quickly.
Storm activity may continue east into Oklahoma later tonight, with additional alerts possible if severe storms organize further.
