LUBBOCK, Texas – A hot August stretch will break early next week as thunderstorms bring both relief and potential travel headaches.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, temperatures will climb to 91 degrees Sunday before rain chances build Monday night. A 30 percent chance of storms begins late Monday, increasing to 40 percent Tuesday night, which could affect evening travel on I-27 and local roads.
Drivers should stay alert for slick pavement and sudden downpours, especially during the Tuesday evening commute. Outdoor plans across Lubbock and nearby counties may face delays as storms strengthen during peak afternoon heating.
Sunday stays dry with sunshine and highs in the low 90s. Winds shift from the northeast to southeast during the afternoon, adding humidity to the air. By Monday, skies remain mostly sunny, but conditions will change quickly after dark as storms push into the South Plains.
Rain chances remain scattered through Wednesday before tapering late week. Cooler air arrives behind the storms, with afternoon highs falling into the upper 80s by Thursday and Friday.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and allow extra travel time during the storm window. Flash flooding isn’t expected, but downpours may briefly overwhelm low-lying streets.
The National Weather Service will monitor storm development and issue advisories if needed.
