Officials warn residents to avoid low-lying roads and monitor flash flood alerts closely as rainfall could exceed two inches in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lubbock, the storm system will likely intensify by late tonight and continue through Saturday. There’s a 90% chance of rain today and tonight, with the heaviest storms expected to start after midnight. Thunderstorm activity will persist through Saturday night, with occasional gusts up to 20 mph. Localized flooding is possible, particularly in areas prone to drainage issues.
Saturday’s forecast calls for a high near 68°F with south winds between 10 and 20 mph. Rain chances remain at 90%, with rainfall potentially reaching up to two inches. As the storm progresses, areas in Lubbock and nearby towns, including Plainview and Muleshoe, are advised to stay informed through local weather alerts and prepare for possible power outages or road closures due to flooding.
The weather is expected to clear by Sunday, bringing partly sunny skies with a 40% chance of rain early in the day, tapering off by night. Monday will offer a brief respite with mostly sunny skies and a high near 65°F, although cooler conditions are forecast for the evening, dipping to around 37°F.
By Tuesday, Lubbock can expect sunny skies with highs reaching 64°F, offering residents a break from the storms. Officials recommend stocking up on emergency supplies and avoiding travel on affected routes this weekend, especially along I-27, where visibility and road conditions could be hazardous.
