Houston, Texas – High heat and poor air quality will grip southeast Texas on Sunday, launching June with a mix of health and travel concerns.

According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, an Ozone Action Day is in effect for Houston, Galveston, and Brazoria on Sunday, June 1, with temperatures pushing toward 91°F and stagnant air trapping pollution across the region. The alert advises residents to limit driving—especially on I-45—and reduce emissions by walking, biking, or carpooling. Sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, should stay indoors during peak afternoon hours.

The National Weather Service expects partly sunny skies Sunday with only a 20% chance of storms after 4 p.m. Light winds and high humidity will further limit air movement, intensifying the ozone buildup. Overnight lows remain warm near 74°F, giving little relief for those without air conditioning.

Looking ahead, summer conditions dominate the week. Monday and Tuesday bring highs near 90°F under mostly sunny skies. A slight thunderstorm chance returns Monday afternoon and again late Tuesday, though widespread rain is unlikely.

By Wednesday and Thursday, rain chances increase slightly with highs hovering near 92°F. Humidity remains high, and the heat index may exceed 95°F by midweek.

What’s next? Smoke from Canadian wildfires could drift into Texas by midweek, affecting visibility and possibly amplifying air quality concerns. Stay tuned for updates as more alerts could be issued.
