Houston, TX – A relentless heat wave is gripping much of Texas, with extreme temperatures forecast to soar above 110°F in parts of South and Central Texas, including the Houston area, through Monday, May 19.
According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, a strong high-pressure system anchored over the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast is driving widespread heat across the region. Daytime highs are expected to range from the upper 90s along the Gulf Coast to the low 110s in inland areas, threatening to break several May temperature records. Overnight lows are forecast to remain in the 70s, offering little relief for vulnerable populations.
Cities such as Houston, San Antonio, and Austin are under a “Major” to “Extreme” heat risk designation through early next week. The Climate Prediction Center also indicates a 40–60% chance of excessive heat continuing into next week, particularly from May 21 to 22.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and ensure access to cooling, especially at night. Those without air conditioning or with heat sensitivities face elevated health risks. Authorities recommend checking on elderly neighbors and securing proper ventilation indoors.
This heat wave marks one of the earliest and most intense temperature surges in recent Texas spring history.
