Amarillo, Texas – Scorching heat and a growing chance of thunderstorms will define Saturday across the Texas Panhandle, with local roads and outdoor plans at risk. Heat index values in Palo Duro Canyon could reach 105°F by mid-afternoon, making this one of the hottest days so far this summer.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, heat and humidity will peak Saturday, especially in low-lying areas like Palo Duro Canyon, where little wind and full sun may combine for dangerously high feels-like temperatures. Afternoon thunderstorm chances also rise to 30% across the area, with the greatest risk for heavy downpours coming Saturday night through Wednesday. Flooding remains possible, though storms are not expected to be severe.

Travelers on US-287 and I-40 should watch for standing water and sudden visibility changes during downpours. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak heat, hydrate regularly, and avoid canyon hiking after 11 a.m.

Sunday will bring brief relief with mostly sunny skies, but isolated storms return Monday and Tuesday nights. Temperatures will stay near or above 90°F through midweek, keeping heat safety top of mind for residents and visitors.
