AUSTIN, Texas – Dry air and gusty northwest winds will make Wednesday one of the most fire-prone days of the season across Central and South Texas. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for much of the Hill Country, I-35 corridor, and the Edwards Plateau, where strong winds and single-digit humidity could turn a single spark into a fast-moving grass fire.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, the watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening. Winds are expected to reach 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, combining with humidity near 16%. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure any equipment that could produce sparks. TxDOT crews are also advising extra caution along rural highways and construction zones where dry grasses line the roadside.

Conditions ease by Thursday as winds calm and temperatures moderate, but fields and pastures will stay parched heading into Halloween. Trick-or-treaters on Friday can expect clear skies, light winds, and a mild evening—ideal for outdoor events across Bexar, Travis, and Comal counties.

By the weekend, another warming trend develops with highs in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees under steady sunshine. The longer-range outlook hints at a chillier pattern arriving by early November, marking the first solid taste of late-fall air across Texas. For now, the focus remains on Wednesday’s fire risk—one careless spark could set off a dangerous blaze.
