AUSTIN, Texas — The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for much of south-central Texas through 10 a.m. Friday, along with an Extreme Cold Warning that will take effect Saturday evening and last through midday Monday.

Forecasters said dense fog early Friday morning could reduce visibility to one-quarter mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions across the region, including Austin, San Antonio, San Marcos, New Braunfels and surrounding communities.

More significant impacts are expected this weekend as an arctic air mass moves into the area. Wind chills could fall to 5 degrees below zero in parts of the Hill Country and southern Edwards Plateau, particularly late Saturday night, early Sunday, and again Sunday night into Monday morning. Elsewhere across south-central Texas, wind chills are forecast to range from the single digits to the teens.

The extreme cold is expected to pose life-threatening conditions for people and animals without adequate shelter. Officials warned of a high risk for hypothermia and frostbite, as well as likely damage to unprotected water pipes and increased danger to livestock.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors and take steps to protect plumbing. Drivers are advised to slow down in foggy conditions, use low-beam headlights and allow extra distance between vehicles.

The cold warning covers all of south-central Texas, including Bexar, Travis, Williamson, Hays, Comal, Guadalupe, Kerr, Gillespie, Medina, Uvalde, Val Verde, Maverick and Dimmit counties, among others.
