Amarillo, Texas – Dangerous heat continues to intensify across the Texas Panhandle today, with triple-digit temperatures, little overnight relief and a growing risk of heat-related illness as the hottest days of the heat wave arrive Monday and Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, afternoon highs today will range from 100 to 108 degrees across the Panhandles, with Guymon reaching 108 degrees, Beaver 108 degrees, Perryton 106 degrees, Borger 105 degrees, Canadian 107 degrees, Amarillo 101 degrees, and Palo Duro Canyon climbing to 107 degrees. Much of the region faces a Major (Level 3 of 4) to Extreme (Level 4 of 4) HeatRisk, with the most dangerous conditions centered over the eastern Texas Panhandle.
The heat wave is expected to peak Monday and Tuesday, when temperatures climb even higher. Forecast highs are expected to reach 103 to 111 degrees Monday and 101 to 110 degrees Tuesday, while overnight lows remain in the upper 60s to upper 70s, offering little opportunity for recovery from the daytime heat.
The prolonged stretch of extreme temperatures significantly increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for older adults, young children, outdoor workers and anyone without reliable cooling. Heat stress compounds over multiple days, making hydration and limiting outdoor activity even more critical.
Residents should drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon, wear lightweight clothing and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
The dangerous heat is expected to continue through much of the upcoming week, with highs remaining near or above 100 degrees through Friday. Additional heat advisories or warnings may be issued if conditions continue to intensify.
