FORT WORTH, Texas — Warm sunshine is giving way to a sharp December cooldown across North Texas as a strong cold front approaches midweek. After a mild start in the 50s and 60s Tuesday, temperatures will surge briefly into the mid-60s Wednesday, then plunge into the 40s by Thursday as the front sweeps through.
The National Weather Service in Fort Worth says the system will bring increasing rain chances Wednesday night into Thursday, especially east of Interstate 35. The Canton, Palestine, and Waco areas could see 40–60% chances for scattered showers, while Dallas-Fort Worth and Sherman-Denison hold a lower 20–30% chance. Breezy conditions will follow the front, pushing cooler air deep into Central Texas by early Thursday morning.
Meteorologists emphasize that temperatures will stay above freezing while precipitation falls, limiting ice risk. Still, the quick drop will make Thursday morning feel 20 degrees colder than Wednesday’s highs, with breezy north winds and afternoon highs only in the low 40s to upper 40s.
By Friday, conditions improve under partial clearing with highs rebounding to the mid-50s, followed by a pleasant weekend warmup into the 60s. Those planning early December travel across Texas should watch for slick, damp roads and gusty crosswinds on major highways including I-20, I-35, and U.S. 75 late Wednesday into Thursday.
Five-Day Local Outlook (Dallas–Fort Worth Area):

- Wednesday: 64°F, breezy with clouds increasing.
