Amarillo, TX – The Panhandle awoke this morning under calm skies and a biting 31°F chill, but all eyes now turn west. A strong cold front is sliding across the region, and the next 24 hours could deliver Amarillo’s first measurable snow event of December—bringing both beauty and travel headaches.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Amarillo report that snow bands may begin forming around 9 p.m. Wednesday, continuing through 3 p.m. Thursday. Light accumulations are likely, but isolated areas could see 1 to 2 inches of snow where heavier bands persist. Roads may turn slick quickly, especially along I-40, U.S. 60, and Highway 87, as freezing air grips wet surfaces.

A sharp cold push from Canada is fueling this change. Gusty northwest winds up to 25 mph will make the 20s feel closer to 10°F, producing a brisk start to Thursday’s commute. Those clearing driveways or heading to work should watch for black ice, particularly on bridges and shaded intersections.

“Localized snow bands could make a big difference in totals,” forecasters said late Tuesday. “Some areas may get only a dusting, while others could briefly accumulate over an inch per hour.”

By Friday, skies turn sunny again, but cold air lingers. The quick freeze-thaw cycle could cause additional slick spots early in the weekend.

Five-Day Outlook:
Thursday: High 41°, snow chance 30%, ending late.
Friday: Mostly sunny, high 50°.
Saturday: Clear, high 56°.
Sunday: Sunny, high 54°.
Monday: High near 60°, light breeze.
