Amarillo, Texas – Texans in the Panhandle should brace for a punishing stretch of summer heat beginning Monday, July 21st, as temperatures in Amarillo climb near 98°F under sunny skies. South winds could push heat indexes even higher, posing risks for anyone working or traveling outdoors, especially along I-40.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Monday’s heat is just the beginning. Daytime highs will hover in the mid to upper 90s all week, with little overnight relief as lows remain stuck in the low 70s. Winds from the south at 10 to 15 mph will persist, bringing occasional gusts up to 20 mph.

Drivers, especially those on I-40 and U.S. 287, are urged to keep vehicles cool, stay hydrated, and avoid non-essential outdoor activity during peak heat hours from 2 to 6 p.m. No rain relief is expected until a slight chance of thunderstorms returns late Wednesday night into early Thursday.
