Texas – A crisp wind sweeps across the High Plains this morning, carrying hints of winter’s return. Temperatures in Amarillo linger near 20°F, and by midweek, residents could see a brief mix of rain and snow as a weak system crosses the Panhandle.
The National Weather Service in Amarillo notes that Wednesday evening brings a 30–40% chance for precipitation, starting as light rain before changing to snow showers as temperatures fall into the 20s. While accumulation should stay light, slick spots may develop on bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways along I-40 and US-287 after sunset.
Ahead of the system, Tuesday stays sunny and brisk, with highs near 59°F and gusts up to 30 mph. Winds shift northwest late Wednesday as colder air filters in, keeping Thursday’s highs near 43°F under mostly sunny skies. By the weekend, clear conditions and milder air return, pushing highs back into the upper 50s to low 60s.
Drivers should watch for freezing drizzle or icy patches if precipitation lingers into early Thursday. Though snowfall will likely be minor, rapid temperature drops could still cause flash freezing — a classic early December hazard for the Panhandle.
Bundle up, keep an eye on windshield wipers, and stay alert for changing conditions Wednesday night.
