Austin, Texas – A rapid return to summer-like heat is underway across South Central Texas, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and increasing fire risks as early as Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, highs will rise from the upper 70s Wednesday into the upper 80s and low 90s by Thursday and Friday. Austin is expected to reach around 91°F, with surrounding areas like San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Del Rio pushing into the mid-90s by the end of the week.
South winds between 5 and 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, will combine with dry conditions to elevate wildfire risk across the region. With no rainfall expected through early next week, vegetation will continue to dry out, making ignition more likely.
Major corridors including I-35 and rural areas west of Austin face the highest concern, where open land and wind exposure can accelerate fire spread. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and properly secure equipment that could create sparks.
Overnight lows remain mild, generally in the 50s and 60s, offering little relief from drying conditions. The heat and lack of rain will persist into early next week, with additional advisories possible as fire danger increases.
