Lubbock, Texas – Severe thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across West Texas within hours, with two rounds of storms expected to develop by mid-afternoon and intensify again late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, scattered storms will first form during the afternoon, followed by a stronger, more widespread round overnight. Some storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 70 mph and hail up to golf ball size, especially across the Caprock and areas east of Lubbock, including Plainview, Post, and Aspermont.
The greatest risk for severe weather is expected between 3 p.m. and midnight, when instability peaks and storms organize. While tornado potential remains low, it is not zero, particularly in areas under a higher severe risk zone east of the city.
Drivers along US-84, US-62, and I-27 should prepare for sudden downpours, strong crosswinds, and reduced visibility. Blowing dust may also develop ahead of storms, briefly lowering visibility in open areas.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, monitor warnings, and have multiple ways to receive alerts. Storm activity may continue into the overnight hours, with additional updates likely if severe warnings are issued.
