Amarillo, Texas – Powerful winds sweeping across the Texas Panhandle today could make travel difficult and send loose objects flying as a strong cold front pushes through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, north winds will frequently gust between 45 and 55 mph through Wednesday afternoon, with a 10 to 30 percent chance of gusts reaching 60 mph in the southeastern Texas Panhandle. The strongest winds are expected near Pampa, Wheeler, Canadian, and Clarendon, where open terrain can amplify gusts.
Drivers across Amarillo, Borger, Dumas, and Hereford may encounter hazardous conditions along Interstate 40, U.S. Highway 287, and U.S. 60. High-profile vehicles such as semis, RVs, and trailers could be especially vulnerable to sudden crosswinds.
Blowing dust may also reduce visibility in rural areas, particularly across exposed farmland south and east of Amarillo. Emergency managers recommend securing outdoor furniture, trash bins, and other loose items that could become airborne.
Winds should gradually weaken after sunset Wednesday, but breezy conditions may persist into the evening. Officials urge residents across the Panhandle to stay alert for changing travel conditions throughout the day.
