Austin, Texas – A sharp weather shift is underway across Central Texas this afternoon, with strong wind gusts and falling temperatures expected to impact travel and outdoor plans by early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, a cold front will move through the region by around 4 p.m. Friday, bringing a rapid wind shift to the north and gusts up to 35 mph. Ahead of the front, temperatures are climbing into the upper 80s and low 90s, including Austin, San Antonio, and surrounding communities.
Once the front passes, conditions will turn noticeably cooler and breezier. Drivers along I-35 and Highway 290 may encounter sudden crosswinds, especially during the evening commute. Loose outdoor items could be blown around, and brief visibility reductions are possible in dusty areas west of Austin.
Saturday brings a cooler pattern, with highs dropping into the 70s and a slight chance of light rain across parts of South-Central Texas. The cooler air will be short-lived.
By early next week, temperatures rebound into the upper 80s and 90s statewide, with increasing chances for rain returning by mid to late week.
Residents should secure outdoor objects and remain alert for sudden wind shifts as the front moves through this evening.
