Austin, TX – Drivers across El Paso County and the Borderland region can breathe easier Wednesday after Texas officials confirmed that rumors of major highway closures are false.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a memo circulating online and shared by some media outlets claims temporary 10-day road closures would impact major routes in and out of El Paso. DPS said the document is fake and no highways — or any roads — are scheduled to close over the next 10 days.

The warning comes as commuters in El Paso, Las Cruces, and surrounding West Texas communities expressed concern about potential travel disruptions along key corridors including I-10 and U.S. 54. DPS emphasized there are no planned shutdowns affecting those routes.

Officials said it remains unclear where the fraudulent memo originated. No additional information has been released about its source.

DPS reminded residents that all official announcements are issued by the DPS Media and Communications Office, designated public information officers, or posted on verified DPS social media accounts and the agency’s official website.

Misinformation about road closures can quickly impact travel plans, freight movement, and cross-border commuting in the El Paso metro area, which connects Texas and New Mexico.

Drivers are encouraged to verify traffic alerts directly through DPS or the Texas Department of Transportation before making travel adjustments.
