Abilene, Texas – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across parts of West and North Texas this afternoon, bringing the threat of very large hail and a possible tornado north of the I-20 corridor. The highest risk window stretches from 3 p.m. through midnight Thursday, with storms potentially impacting evening travel and outdoor plans.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, the region is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will begin developing by mid-afternoon, with the strongest activity likely centered north of Abilene and near the Wichita Falls area. Large hail larger than golf balls is the primary concern, but damaging winds and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Cities including Sweetwater, Anson, Stamford, and Haskell lie in the higher-risk zone. Drivers along U.S. Highway 277 and I-20 should monitor for rapidly changing weather, reduced visibility, and slick roads during the evening commute.
Residents are urged to charge devices, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
Severe weather conditions are expected to diminish after midnight, but additional alerts may be issued depending on storm strength and movement.
